Rest day, aka trip planning day

Our job today was to rest, again. Seems like I’ve had to say that a bit lately. But when you both come down with something that is lingering, it is best to not push it. Especially when your next stop includes lots of great food and wine!

Plus, this was our bonus day in the Lassen area. If we were 100%, maybe we would have gone back into the park. Maybe. But with the peaceful surroundings and high altitude, my guess is today would have been similar, even if we weren’t recovering.

Today included this…

Not much sun, but it peeked through just enough on occasion. That, and a refreshing breeze, made for a perfect afternoon outside.

… and this..

The skies were perfectly clear, and we occasionally heard a jet screaming around. Rick checked out FlightRadar24 (our favorite flight tracking app) and found out it was a T38; if you’re uninformed like me, it is a military training jet, and apparently was used in the original Top Gun as the “enemy” jet. Well, it moved too fast and was up really high, so we only heard it. But it was distinctive!

… and this!

Our favorite freezer treat on a stick, the strawberry shortcake bar. Ice cream is my go to. Can’t wait to get home for some Mitchell’s. But for today, this was comforting after coughing way too much.

Meanwhile…

Daisy decided to use my footstool as a chair since her lounging bed right next to me apparently wasn’t good enough. She looks like a circus elephant balancing on the little stool. She does a better job at it than I expect every time she jumps up there
Daisy likes rest days as much as we do!

Most importantly, we’ve made some changes to our schedule. We realized that after Napa, we can get to Great Basin National Park; you may remember that we skipped it earlier this year with heat/medical concerns. The weather is more temperate this time of the year, and it was a relatively easy swap out for our planned time elsewhere (non-NPS). And so, we’re excited that we will be heading there next week! It is not only a bonus for this trip, but makes it so much easier than trying to tack it on to some other adventure. It is much more remote than where we are now., but honestly not that far out of the way now that we are out here.

Our goal to get to all of the continental US National Parks is still something we intend to do! We have been spending some time thinking about how we prioritize the remaining parks, in addition to some other travels that we want to do in Livvy. It’s always fun to be generating ideas and planning future trips! I think that we now have our 2026 pretty well outlined, with a few ideas already in the works for 2027.

For tonight, more rest and then on the road to Napa!
