Today was a restful, relaxing day. We had no driving to do, nowhere we needed to go, and nothing we needed to do. A day to sit back and enjoy our surroundings.
When we stared these RV travels we rarely had “rest” days planned. Looking back, I was still planning these trips like planning a vacation. Go, go, go, every day, to get the most out of the time we had away. Except, we were retired. At one point, in the planning of this year’s trips, Karen said to me, “Why don’t we just take MORE time on the road? What difference does it make? This is our life, not a vacation.”
What an epiphany!! She saw what I hadn’t. Sure, additional days in campgrounds cost money, but taking the additional time allows us days like today. It helps keep us energized and ready for the next adventure. Gives us time to breathe. And makes these travels far better.
I woke up at 8:55 this morning (yes, I am the sleepyhead). Karen was ready, phone in hand, to show me the College Gameday coverage live from Ohio State. We watched as Lee Corso made his final gameday pick, donning the headgear of Brutus Buckeye, same as he did 29 years ago when he started the tradition. Gameday will definitely not be the same without him! And his juju must have worked because OSU did upset Texas to start the season.

After a grueling morning of enjoying coffee and breakfast outside, needlepointing and reading, and taking in the fresh air, we put the Needy Bichon in Livvy and made the short walk to a diner near our campsite. The Birdsview Diner came highly recommended by the campground staff and Google reviews. Plus, they have beer on tap so how could we go wrong?

We made a good choice. The outdoor seating was lovely, and the cold IPA’s were great. And the food was excellent! From the road, the place didn’t look like much. But looks can be deceiving, as they were here. If you’re ever in the area, please stop by the Birdsview.

Being rightfully exhausted after our busy morning, we came back to the RV and took a wonderful nap. Nothing better than that on a lazy Saturday afternoon. After waking, we came back outside to repeat our morning, needlepointing and reading and eating dinner. And we are still outside as I write this.
Tomorrow is a moving day. We pack up and head to our next national park. That’s always exciting. But I am also very excited because tomorrow we are meeting an old friend of mine for lunch along the way.
When I was younger, I was really into skateboarding, and I spent an awful lot of time doing it. And the one person I spent most of that time with was Ron. He was a couple years younger than me, but way better at skateboarding than I was. Eventually his younger brother Dan joined us as well. Others came and went, but Ron was the consistent one.
I had occasionally wondered over the long years what happened to him. Then, as we were preparing for this trip, a notice popped up in LinkedIn offering me a suggestion of someone I may know. Sure enough, it was Ron. We connected, only to find out he and his wife live right along our intended travel route! So after 35 years, I get to see my old friend again tomorrow.
But there will DEFINITELY be no skateboarding involved!!
