Looking at the weather today in Las Vegas, in addition to the short-range forecasts for there and Death Valley, we certainly made the right call. Temps in the mid to upper 90’s. That’s pretty hot.
But it’s a dry heat, right?
Where we sit, just a few miles into the canyon east of Cedar City, it is 47 degrees outside. Mind you, it is 9:12pm. Today struggled to get to the high of 53. Still, we were able to get quite a bit of outside time and fresh air. The wind mid-day forced us back inside because that was for too cold. But an after-dinner nightcap at the picnic table was enjoyable.
We are here until Wednesday morning. The next two days it gets even colder (highs in the upper 30’s). I am not complaining as it beats the intense heat. But come on! We wanted cooler, not frigid. We made our bed and so we must lie in it.
Tomorrow we have a mobile groomer coming to take care of the smelly white mop living with us (Needy Bichon). After that, with low temps and rain in the forecast, we will snuggle up inside and read or stitch or nap. Likely start drinking early as well.
But as we sat tonight after dinner, we discussed the remainder of this trip. After we leave here, we are scheduled to head to Baker, Nevada for three nights. If you’ve never heard of Baker it’s because there is nothing there except proximity to Great Basin National Park. And apparently great star viewing. As we look forward, we can see that the two days we are supposed to be there the temps will be in the upper 80’s. Hmm, not the best with the zero shade at the campsite. After those three nights, we have one mid-way on the drive to Estes Park, where the weather is fine!
So, we consider a shuffle.
Do we leave Baker early? If so, do we stay extra days at the mid-drive stopover? Or, do we move up the mid-stop and get into Estes two days early? Does our current booking have nights in advance of our stay? Being the Memorial Day weekend does not help. Is there another RV park in Estes we can fill in with? Can we stop in Park City on the way to take up two nights?
Why am I asking you?
There is a lot of planning involved on putting together a 45-day trip like this. Making changes is equally as challenging. And we don’t want to just stay anywhere. We want the places to be rated well and be close to our driving route. Bonus points given for an onsite bar. Quadruple bonus points if near an In-and-Out.
Lots and lots of people who travel by RV live day-to-day or week-to-week, never planning ahead more than that. Those people are insane. Neither of our brains are wired to that degree of spontaneity. We like to have a plan. As the old saying goes, “spontaneity has a time and place.” For us, this is true of where we are going to stay.
At this point we have several options, some of which we’ve already begun to pursue. Until we start to get some information, we aren’t certain where we’ll be after this stop. But we’ll be sure to let you know when we do.
