Breathless

We have arrived in Colorado. There is nothing quite like seeing the Rockies again. As we crossed through Nebraska into Colorado, we enjoyed the view as they became closer and closer. Today, we are resting just East of Denver at Cherry Creek State Park. It’s an expansive space just outside of suburbia, and has everything we can hope for before we get to the National Parks. Reiterating Rick’s comment, there is so much to see in our beautiful country!

We were grateful for an uneventful drive, especially since we looked forward to today’s incredible views. Somehow the skies are bluer and the clouds are brighter here. The snow-capped mountains greeted us, as expected. Pictures from the car just don’t do it justice, so I didn’t even take any this time. There was one point where we had to exit the freeway and take a several mile detour due to an accident; we are grateful to be safe, not stuck in the backup, and hope that there were no serious injuries on the road.

Our first stop in the Denver area just had to be In-N-Out burger. Rick has been talking about it for months! The timing was right, and it was just a mile off of our route. Even Daisy got a little bit of a french fry treat as the wind delivered some goodies her way. (She normally wouldn’t get that kind of food) It was yummy and spoiled our appetite for the rest of the day.

As we arrived, we took the dog for a short walk around our campground loop to stretch our legs. In that short walk, we both realize that the elevation is having an impact on us. We’re at 5,633 feet so that’s a legit change of over 3,500 feet in one day’s drive. The mile high city lives up to that reputation of having an impact on people! Glad we aren’t planning any huge hikes in the next couple of days.

After a little bit of a rest, we ventured out to explore some more of the park. The campground is full, which makes me happy that Rick does such a great job finding these spots for us well in advance. Little Miss Daisy got her exercise as we walked over 3 miles to a beautiful beach and reservoir. We enjoyed some more sunshine outside, soaking it up after the long winter months. Out here, just like home, it is quite cool at night so we will be making the transition to the heat being on overnight. We’re continuing to avoid a complete freeze, and hoping it stays that way.

Tonight we will be staying in and curious what we will hear. The campground has clearly posted that there are coyotes here, so no evening adventures for us!

Our lovely spot for the night… see the perfect skies???
The beautiful Rockies off in the distance, as seen from our campsite
The reservoir/dam area offered us everything we could have hoped for today!
Clearly, she’s a beach 🙂
After our walk it was time to soak up the sun for a bit. Have we mentioned these great new camping chairs we found at REI? They are only a couple of pounds, pack into a tiny little bag and snap together with tension rods. They are comfortable, too!! (and of course Daisy has a place to sit right next to me)
