Kansas… still Kansas

Well, we spent the day driving across Kansas. It’s a long road. We are still here. We have learned a few things, including I don’t ever want to live in Kansas. There doesn’t appear to be much to see or do.

Driving through downtown KC (actually most of that is in MO, how weird is that???) is miserable. We experienced that joy yesterday and today. We know that urban and RV do not mix. It doesn’t bode well for some of our upcoming adventures; patience will be required.

Kansas decided not to be part of EZ pass. Really? So we will be paying our toll when they get around to invoicing us over the next few days.

We skirted around Topeka, drove through Wichita, and beyond that a whole bunch of nothing. Lots of 2 lane roads. Little towns with little to offer. A few spots were cute, but most were not. We passed quite a few RV parks, and it made me nervous for our final destination as they looked like something Cousin Eddie would have enjoyed.

As expected, lots of agriculture and cattle. Rick researched that their two main crops are wheat and sorghum. But they have a ridiculous amount of wind farms! They were everywhere. Must be a good way for farmers to boost their income, and I can’t blame them. It definitely changed the landscape with these wind turbine farms all over the place.

The Flint Hills area was unexpectedly beautiful. Some rolling hills, interesting landscapes, among agriculture and cattle. It was by far the most interesting part of the drive.

We did see tumbleweed roll across the highway and farm houses that could be straight out of the Wizard of Oz. In fact, there is some Dorothy museum nearby but it seems like a tourist trap, so we will be skipping that.

We drove over 6 hours… still in Kansas. As we approached our destination for the evening, we drove almost 2 miles on a bumpy dirt/gravel road. Not what you want to do at the end of a long driving day.

But thankfully, our stop at the Western Star RV resort is spacious, quiet and lovely. It’s 80 degrees with a lovely breeze. We are happy to be outside, enjoying a quiet evening with one of the many casserole dishes we prepared in advance. The simple pleasures that we are always looking for!

Another long driving day tomorrow… all part of the plan to soon maximize our time in CA!

No matter where you go, people are crazy. This guy even advertised it after he drove around us in the gravel, just to get to his turn lane and a red light.
Happy to be outside…
