A long awaited visit

I’ll admit freely that today was a day I was really excited about. Was it the clear skies and crisp air this morning? No, but it was beautiful. Was it the prospect of eating at Joe’s Kansas City BBQ? A little, but not really. Was it the relaxation that comes from NOT having a long day driving? Partially.

What really had me excited was that we were going to visit…

A needlepoint store.

Yes, you read that right. I was excited about going to a needlepoint store. Not just any needlepoint shop. No. This is KC Needlepoint (still have no idea where they got the name). We have purchased several projects from KCN online and we both love receiving their emails with new items. They always have such a wonderful selection, and neither of us could wait!

For those who do not know, I took up needlepoint on a whim a little over two years ago. Karen has been stitching since she was young. On one visit to a local Cleveland needlepoint shop, I saw a piece that spoke to me. It was the British flag. I had taken Julia to London when she graduated high school, so I thought that would be a nice gift for her.

I blurted out to Karen, “Can you teach me to do this?” She replied yes, but have the ladies in the store help me pick out thread. I have no idea why I wanted to try, nor did I think I would actually enjoy it. Oh was I wrong! I immediately fell in love with needlepoint and found it both exceedingly relaxing and superbly fulfilling. I was hooked, and have done many projects since that first. The times Karen and I sit and work our projects is some of my most treasured time together.

The store was everything we had hoped, and the staff was so incredibly friendly. They are dog friendly so we were even able to take Daisy with us. We spent quite a long time shopping, and left with four new projects (completely not needed, but so cute we couldn’t pass!). We both want to thank all of the staff who came over to say hello and talk about our trip. They really did make our visit special.

As we didn’t get enough KC BBQ last night, we went for lunch at Joe’s Kansas City BBQ. Joe’s has been around since 1996, the entire time existing in a gas station. While there are actually a couple pumps still working, most of the building is Joe’s. It did not disappoint! There was so much food that our dinner consisted of leftovers from dinner last night as well as lunch today. I think I can hear my arteries clogging but, damn, it was good!

As a side note, if you haven’t checked out our maps, please do. Under the main menu (on a mobile device, the two horizontal lines in the top right of our site), you will find the links. The 2024 Travel Maps will show separate Google maps for each of our trips, with all stops shown. The National Parks Visited map is pretty self-explanatory! We will add to these maps each time we hit something new.
