Today started off slow and relaxing, enjoying a cup of coffee and a light morning rain under the palapa. Since we didn’t have plans until the afternoon we could take it easy.
Last night was rather interesting. I preface this story by saying that, for those of you who haven’t spent time in campgrounds, not all are, shall we say, created equal. On this trip alone we have gone from an overnight at a rest stop surrounded by semis to a manicured, palm tree lined paradise. And seemingly everything in between.
The clientele is obviously different as well. At the lower-end sites, the RVs are smaller and less fancy. The grounds tend to be more open between sites. More dirt and grass and less concrete. The people tend to be less talkative, but respectful of the people around them. Very little social interaction. The upper-end sites (like our current and the previous) are simply gorgeous – inlaid brick drives, privacy foliage, fully paved roads. And obnoxious wealthy people who enjoy making sure you know how wealthy they are. Never outright, but in inuendo and inference. Always making sure you know where they stand.
We don’t really fit in with either group. We’re somewhere in the middle.
We’re not “Mitch”, a pompous man we met at the KOA on Sugarloaf Key. In the course of a less-than 5 minute conversation managed to drop that he spends most of his work life on an airplane, that his wife just sold her interest in her accounting practice to her remaining partners, and that they sold their 6,000 square foot house and now live full-time out of a 40-foot motorhome (because who needs all that space anyway?). And was this because we asked? No! We simply said hello to his as he passed us on the street. Apparently he thought we’d care.
Last night, at this amazing property in Ft. Myers, we witnessed a cross-property shouting match between two seemingly entitled people – all related to music being played outside at a very loud volume. The screaming included accusations about being drunk and plenty of swearing. Admittedly the music selection was awful, but it was yet another reminder to us that we don’t completely fit in with this group.
In general, the bad behavior we might have been concerned about in a “lower-end” location never has happened, but it has definitely been present in places we didn’t anticipate.?
We are both very happy in the middle. It’s why we are perfect for each other.
Speaking of perfect, we had a perfectly wonderful day today! We were fortunate enough to spend the afternoon with Karen’s long-time friend Lolly and her boyfriend George. It was lovely to catch up , and to see just how happy these two are together. Thank you again to both of them and we hope to see you again soon!
