Know your gate and gas

We had a wonderful evening last night at Tinez Farms. We got up early this morning, eager to visit Biscayne and Everglades National Parks before heading down to the Keys. Our perfect plan was to have coffee, get gas, and get to Biscayne by 9:00am. Easy peasy.

I was thrilled that we were pulling out of Tinez at 8:00am, giving us plenty of time to fuel up and get to Biscayne.

Approaching the gate for the farms, I saw the padlock. Immediately I knew I screwed up.

The evening before, farm management had sent me a text with the gate code. They followed up with a call, ensuring I had received the code. I told them that of course I had. What a ridiculous question.

Staring at the gate, I knew I had deleted the text from the night before. We were leaving 2 hours before the farm opened to the public and I had no way to exit. My habit of deleting texts had come back to haunt me. A harrowing 15 minutes later, contemplating my stupidity, farm management texted back with the code.

Great! Only a few minutes behind schedule.

Now, here’s another thing we’ve learned about the RV world. Our entire lives we have driven cars that ran on unleaded gas. We may be old, but not old enough to have pumped leaded! Livvy runs on diesel. And, unbeknownst to us, there are different types of diesel.

Looking for a station that had Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, the kind recommend by Mercedes, was incredibly difficult! The nearest station took us through several Homestead neighborhoods before finally heading onto Route 1 for the long drive to Sugarloaf Key.

Karen wanted to take the drive from Homestead to Sugarloaf so that I could enjoy the sites along the way. She fought through high crosswinds the entire drive so that I could watch out the windows. The views were amazing, and I will make up for it by driving out of the Keys in a few days.

Our home for the next three nights is Sugarloaf Key KOA. This place is truly an outstanding property! The sites are amazing (see picture), the staff is incredibly helpful, and we’re right on the ocean. There’s even a bar on site that we went to for happy hour. We’re really excited about this stay.

Tomorrow will be a long day for a different reason. We are heading to Dry Tortugas National Park – on a seaplane. A new experience for both of us. See you then!

Biscayne was so beautiful!
