Tonight we find ourselves in southern Georgia. Most of today was spent driving down route 95 through South Carolina and Georgia. An impossibly straight, flat, boring stretch of highway. We did get to see a wild hog off the highway. Oh, and the amazingly pungent odor of paper mills in northern Georgia. However, this helped to mask the smell of us not showering for the past two days!
Last night we stayed at a KOA in Charlotte, NC. The campground was very highly rated on the RV trip planning site we use. This is our first “big” trip, one that we used that website to plan. To be honest, the campsite fell short of our expectations. It was definitely well situated near Route 77, but the site itself was not quite what we were expecting.
Tonight we are staying at the Walkabout Camp & RV Park in Woodbine, Georgia. After the let-down of last night’s stay, I was concerned about tonight. As Karen was driving in the morning, I looked again at the details of this campground. I saw that the site has a petting zoo (which I hadn’t read before). I told Karen that I was seriously concerned about what we might find. Perhaps a could of opossum and a raccoon in a cage? A horse that was 1 furlong away from Elmers?
My fears were unfounded, as this campground is as wonderful as we imagined. It is small, yes, but very well kept and managed. Most of the sites are filled with seasonal guests, so we “transients” stick out. Our neighbor was picking up her dog droppings from our site was we pulled in – clearly an indication that overnight guests are few and far between.

After we set up, we took Daisy (A Needy Bichon) for a walk. There are chickens wondering freely on the property, which Daisy found highly amusing! She had never seen a chicken (the primary ingredient in her food), and she found them to be like rabbits – only better! After nearly choking herself on her leash to get at the chickens, we approached the petting zoo. Much to our surprise, it was extremely well-kept. There were about a dozen goats (no interest for the Needy Bichon), more chickens (dinner?), a pony that Daisy ignored, and a kind, attention-seeking, miniature cow. This large dog (cow) fascinated the Needy Bichon and promptly kissed (licked) Karen. It mooed in appreciation of our visit.
After such an amazing adventure, we came back to Livvy for much-needed showers (trust me), cocktails, and dinner. Now, we can sit in our recliners, enjoy a glass of wine, and read our books. This, after all, is why retired! Until tomorrow…
