The open road

The beginnings and endings of these RV trips tend to be filled with days of driving. Getting us into and back from where we want to be. Even though we still have lots to see on this trip, the last three days were just driving. Driving for something new. In the case of today, that something new is South Dakota.

Our stop in Rawlins ended up being great. The last two times through Wyoming we had spent the night in Laramie, at a campground we swore we’d not return to again. It wasn’t bad, just really strange. Western Hills Campground in Rawlins was far superior.

For the better part of two months we’ve had relatively short driving days, usually bookended with stays at lovely areas. These last three days have been more “repositioning” than anything else. Longer drive days with layover stops at night. It is a necessary evil, but it wears on us. Physically and mentally, it can be draining.

Today our travels have brought us to Hot Springs, South Dakota. This is a new state for both of us, and also home for the next 6 nights. Our RV park is lovely, with a private pond and lovely grounds. And we are only 8 miles from the entrance to Wind Cave National Park.

The season in this area ends very soon, so the campground is only sparsely populated. The government shutdown means no cave tour tomorrow. But we will still get to see the above-ground areas and enjoy the beautiful countryside. Our journey continues.

A lone RV in the middle of nowhere. Are Walter and Jessie in business again?
Yes, he was lopen.
