The Midpoint

Zion, and more specifically the town of Springdale. It’s incredible.

But first… does anyone else just love that perfect night where you can sleep with the windows open? Well, we had that last night. Plus we had to take our time this am, which also promoted a good night’s rest. We enjoyed coffee and breakfast outside before our on time departure from the Kolob Canyon region, but not a minute too soon. We had a super short drive, less than an hour between the two. Even while waiting until the last minute to depart, we were still going to get there early.

We had a short highway drive, and then drove through some quaint towns. We both commented about how beautifully green it was. We just haven’t seen that kind of residential spring green yet. It made us excited to get home and see our beautiful yard and how it is blooming (Thanks Sarah U for sending us pics last week!). And then, before we knew it, we were entering Springdale, our home for the next 4 nights.

We have both been here, Rick in the 90s and me in 2018. As soon as we left the highway, we both recognized the amount of growth, both residential and commercial, with many places clearly on the verge of opening for the summer season. It’s all good, especially since Zion is such an incredibly busy/popular park. Springdale just can’t expand, and so the demand created new opportunities in the surrounding areas.

Approaching Zion, just incredible for miles and miles.

This is just such a quaint little area; you know if you have been here. No high rise hotels in town, but lots of great little hotels, b&bs, etc. And of course, restaurants, coffee houses and shopping! Everything is maintained very well and we’re excited to explore over the next few days.

But first, we had to get to our campground. Again, all credit goes to Rick for getting us into the #1 place to stay here, Zion Canyon Campground & RV resort. We are literally in walking distance to the park entrance, and the place is perfect. We are on the Virgin River (hello Virgin River fans, I will be looking for Jack’s Bar :)) which winds all through the park and town. It’s well equipped and clean. We are so happy to call this home, knowing that we don’t have any need to drive for the next 4 days. Everything we want/need is right here. What a treat.

Our spot, not a bad view to the North/East..
Also an incredible view to our West. To say that Springdale is surrounded by the canyon is fact!

Well we got here and were grateful to check in early, meaning we could get out and enjoy a well-deserved lunch out on the town. As much as I love sustaining ourselves on our food in Livvy, it is nice to go out, too. We’d been looking at restaurant reviews and decided on the place right next door… good reviews, not a long walk in the heat, and we were ready to eat!

Mmmmmmargartias (thinking of you, Jill, and our Mother’s day with margaritas). Rick had spicy jalapeno which lived up to its name. I had the coconut since my mom didn’t drink much/often, but did like a coconut cocktail. They were delicious. Happy Mother’s Day to all who celebrate, and as Connie Schultz says, may the day land gently for all who are struggling with this day.

We had burritos that were HUGE and so we had half at lunch, then enjoyed the rest for dinner. Which is good because once again it just feels too hot to cook. For my old (old) PFS friends, this burrito was as good as the ones we used to get at Que Tal. Muy Bueno!!!

I had a great view at this place..
So did he 🙂

From there we walked to a couple of galleries that we saw coming into town. Beautiful, local artwork. We have our eye on a thing or two…

But then it was just T O O H O T. We were melting. So our afternoon consisted of catching up on laundry and some short jaunts to checkout the campground

Rick was able to dip his feet in the Virgin River right at our campground. I can’t wait to get down there, but not something that is dog friendly.

Now we are waiting for it to cool off enough for us to be outside for a bit, and hopefully have fresh air all night again. We will be up bright and early in the am to get into this fantastic park!

We are officially halfway through our trip. In some ways, I can’t believe how fast it has gone already and I am sad to know that so many incredible places are now in our rear view mirror. In other ways, I can barely remember what our house looks like. We have so much to look forward to in the second half of this trip, starting with a few well-deserved days of no driving!

Update… quickly outside for a beautiful evening!!
