Today we are at Myrtle Beach! But first, a recap of the past couple of days
We did love the Hilton Head National RV resort. We learned from conversation with the friendly (bartender) staff that it is only 2.5 years old. It was previously a 9 hole golf course. They made a significant investment, as the RV grounds include a really nice pool, walking paths, bar/restaurant. We didn’t take advantage of the dog washing station but apparently there is one. The area we stayed in, Waters Edge, had the great views that Rick showed you. It also had a separate area for pool/hot tub and a quaint, relaxing bar with a fireplace.
As planned, we spent most of our time on the RV resort property. Rick read, I continued stitching. It was overcast most of the time and therefore very comfortable. When the sun did come out, it was really HOT! We know that we could never move South, and that was reinforced. It didn’t stay hot long enough for either of us to want to use the pool, even though it looked really lovely. The one closest to us wasn’t heated, so that was a deal breaker for me. In fact, to most of the locals it was cold. There weren’t even many golfers out. So it was wonderfully quiet.
We did make a brief walk across the road to the local Bluffton Salty Dog for lunch. I couldn’t resist once I read that they had she-crab soup on the menu! It was fantastic, and a good walk to offset that rich, decadent meal. We also then wandered the property on Wednesday to check out the on site bar. If we are ever back in this area, we would definitely stay there again.
As we checked out on Thursday, we thought it would be a good idea to take the drive and see Hilton Head Island. We weren’t in a huge hurry and both were curious. Well, that ended quickly as the traffic to get onto the island was HORRENDOUS. Neither of us wanted to wait a half hour in solid traffic to see it, so we quickly aborted and made our way north. (I do remember my friend Kelly G saying that the traffic was one of the most frustrating parts of living there, she was right!!)
Before I forget, I have a request. When you go to the gas station, please please please be a good human and remain at the gas pump only for the duration of filling your gas tank. You would be amazed at how many people we see who just leave their car parked at the pump in a busy gas station and go into the store. Today there were two cars parked with no one in sight for over 10 minutes, while we and others had to maneuver around them when another gas pump became available. Completely frustrating. I did want to “be a Karen” and wait for them to come out so that I could yell at them, but know that just isn’t a safe or smart move. So thanks for just letting me vent here.
What I really enjoyed about the drive was how beautiful that area of South Carolina is. Near Hilton Head, there is just one lovely community after another, everything beautifully landscaped. As we moved a little further north, I continued to appreciate the dramatic trees in forested areas, offset by open boggy areas. Then as we got closer to Myrtle Beach, there were multiple areas designated as “swamp”… Maple Swamp, Pee Dee Swamp, etc. Doesn’t have a good sound to it, but everything turned out just fine. We made it to our campsite at Myrtle Beach Travel park, right on the ocean!
Rick has memories here from growing up, as well as bringing his kids here a couple of times. So he will have more to share in the days ahead. It’s my first time, and I’m looking forward to seeing a couple of friends while we are here. For today, we had a good healthy walk of nearly 7 miles and that makes me so happy! It was windy and quite cool, but perfect for what our goals were. Tonight we are hunkered down with some good homemade super spicy chili from home. I know that it is yucky back in Cleveland, stay warm!
