Last stop

We find ourselves, tonight, at a campground in Utica, IL. Just 5.5 hours from Avon. The last of 39 straight nights on the road, after driving more than 6,200 miles. And less than 400 to go tomorrow.

Since we only had a 4 hour driving day today, we took our time getting ready this morning. The weather was great, so we enjoyed our coffee and breakfast outside. We also showered again – several days in a row! For those of you who have never traveled like this, that can indeed be a luxury.

We pulled out just before scheduled checkout at 11am. Since we had time, we decided to take the advice of Kim and Tom and stop for donuts at Hurts Donuts, at a location in West Des Moines. It was only two miles out of our way, after all. And who doesn’t love a good donut? The Lingers were right – Hurts has incredible donuts, so we thank them for the recommendation!

Hurts So Good

The drive was uneventful, although starting “The Return of the King” on audiobook helped. Karen has had no exposure previously to “The Lord of the Rings”, so this is proving both exciting and exceedingly boring at times. LOL. There are many superfluous details that may add to the overall picture being painted but which add nothing to advancing the story. But it helps the miles go by.

Our temporary home tonight is Starved Rock Family Campground in Utica, IL. It is a cute place with incredibly lousy WiFi and only slightly better cell service. But we have a level site and no one next door, so it works!

Tomorrow we make the final journey home for this trip. We will write tomorrow from Avon, Ohio.
