We are safely to Iowa! I enjoy seeing how different each of our campgrounds are. We are back at a KOA that we both have said must be similar to what my friend Cheryl and her husband Don had. Lovely amenities, just enough out of the way to feel like you are “getting away”, and probably really hopping on summer weekends. Some really cute cabin-like sites, a mini-golf course, paddle boats on a little lake and all kinds of fun for the kids. They serve pizza, wings and ice cream in their super cute store. We did a quick walkthrough just to appreciate it.
But for us – it’s clean, comfortable and spacious which is all we really need for tonight. We have a lovely concrete patio with chairs, table, a glider (and even a grill if we had stuff to cook on it) so we are making the most of the warm comfortable breeze. We are sitting in the shade of Livvy since it is just a little too warm for more sunshine today.
That being said, we did start the day in Nebraska with coffee and some yummy breakfast burritos outside. These short-ish driving days make for a more leisurely time, because why be in a hurry? There is some RV guidance that says that smart (retired) RVers should follow the “330 rule”. That means in general, travel no more than 330 miles and be done by 3:30pm to enjoy the rest of the day. We aren’t following that strictly, but we have been intentional to keep our driving days to <6 hours when we can. When you are driving cross country, though, you want your stops to also be close to the highway, as well as highly rated for cleanliness, safety and comfort; so Rick has put time into finding these spots, making each one a place we want to spend some time at. After all, being in these places is part of the experience. The past two nights we have had chatty older couples arrive after us, and leave before us… and I think that they are missing out!
Life in our tiny house on wheels is comfortable. We have adjusted to some new things. Everything has its place and needs to be in it when not actively in use! We can’t both be doing things in the same place, so we have had to learn to take turns in the kitchen; that’s different since we are used to doing both cooking and cleaning up together. It is a lot of togetherness; good thing we like (and love) each other since this does require patience at times! We both like to take the lead sometimes, shocking as that is, and so we sometimes need to just let the other do things on their own, and in their way. We have again been learning what we need, what we want, and what to leave behind the next time. The setup/tear down is so much easier than it was when we started. Having everything with us all of the time makes things so much easier. Lunch breaks are just simpler when we can just open up the fridge, make lunch, clean up and get back on the road. I am still figuring out the right amount of clothes to bring (aka LESS), the amount of needlepoint/crochet to bring (MORE), the amount of books to download (MORE), etc. We have made a big amazon order today to get ready for cleaning as well as some supplies, such as excellent outside wine glasses and better tables for inside dining, necessary for our upcoming adventures. We have done well with this addition in our lives and will enjoy the last couple of days on the road.
One other nice thing about this leisurely travel is that we adjust to each time zone before moving into the next one. We are in central time for a couple of days now.
Illinois is next, and our last official stop!
